Lactation Consultation

Lactation consultants cover more than just helping put baby to the breast!  Check out different things an LC can help with:

Prenatal Hand Expression

Get started before baby is born.  Prenatal hand expression has been known to help increase milk supply

Milk Supply

Milk Supply too little? Or too much?  LCs can help with techniques & supplements to improve milk supply.  They can help support feedings with an overactive supply to regulate and make it easier for you and baby

Latch

Latch issues can be caused by all sorts of things.  Sometimes it's the baby's mouth, sometimes it's the way the breast goes in, sometimes its just positioning.  Having an LC observe your latch can help solve complications and make your breastfeeding easier

Sore/Cracked/Bleeding Nipples

The most common complication with breastfeeding, after perceived low milk, supply is sore, cracked or bleeding nipples.  This can often be painful and a primary reason that people stop breastfeeding.  If you still want to breastfeed but are faced with this problem, LCs can help fix it and get you back on track

Health of the Breast

Pregnancy can do all sorts of things to your body, and sometimes the health of your breasts needs to be taken into consideration when breastfeeding.  LCs can help you through making sure you keep your breasts healthy and when to seek care from a physician.

Baby's Weight Gain

Babies will lose weight after birth, but it's very important that they start to gain it back.  Using professional scales, an LC can help keep track of your baby's weight and see if they are having a proper intake after a feed.

Formula

Not all formulas are made the same.  Not only are there different preparations but also different kinds.  There are ones for sensitive tummies, allergy, milk, soy, the list is endless! LCs can help you find which type is best for your baby.

Pumping & Pumps

Like formula there are a million different kinds of pumps.  LCs can help you choose the one that is best for you, help you set up and feel comfortable with pumps, give tips to get the most milk and milk storage guidelines.

Bottles, SNS, Spoon, Cup, Syringe

Not feeding directly at the breast? Which way is the best? It all depends on what your future feeding preferences are.  LCs can help find what's best for you and your family, and how to use these feeding implements

Premature Babies

Premature babies are an entity all on their own.  Perhaps baby was just a week or two early and you brought them home right away, or perhaps you spent a long time with your baby growing in the NICU.  Bringing baby home and learning your new relationship with feeding is a different beast.  LCs can help that transition and make your return home less stressful.
